2024 Term 1 Week 9
Dear Parents and Carers,
As we approach the Easter weekend, we are reminded of the profound significance of this sacred time in our Catholic faith. Sometimes Easter can be a very busy time in our lives with visiting friends and family and not to mention the ‘chocolate!’ May your Easter celebrations provide an opportunity for your family to relax and enjoy one another’s company as we remember the life, death and resurrection of Jesus. May this Easter be a time of spiritual renewal for your families, as you come together to celebrate the joy of Christ's resurrection. Let us cherish this opportunity to deepen our faith, strengthen our bonds, and spread love and compassion to all.
On 2 April at 10am Kate Thomson, Principal of McAuley Catholic College, will visit our Year 6 students. An Open Evening will be held on Tuesday 9 April from 4pm, for prospective and current families at McAuley Catholic College. This is an opportunity to showcase the College’s facilities, students, and staff. Please register by using the QR code on the flyer.
With great joy, we are pleased to let you know that Emma and Mitchell Ingram are expecting their third child. Emma will start her maternity leave from the beginning of term 2. Emma will be dearly missed at St Mary’s, however we wish her well as she prepares to embrace the joy of a new baby once again. Emma, thank you for your care and commitment to the Year 1 students this year, we wish you and your growing family abundant blessings and happiness.
Interviews for a teacher to commence in Year 1 will take place in Week 10.
I will be on leave during Week 11 of this term. During my absence, Jasmine and Dominique will assume the leadership responsibility within the school.
Wishing all our families a safe and Holy Easter.
Warmest regards,
Jacki

Learning and Teaching
The NSW education system is reforming the curriculum which will be taught in all classrooms from Kindergarten to Year 12. The new curriculum, as a result of the NSW Curriculum Reform, will give students more time to focus on key learning areas so that they can acquire a deeper understanding of central concepts. It will ensure students develop strong foundations for learning, life and work in a complex and fast-changing world.
This reform has been informed by extensive consultation with teachers, parents and education experts, and is underpinned by extensive research. Curriculum reform involves change that spans many aspects of schooling, including teaching, learning, assessment and reporting to parents. New syllabuses provide schools with a unique opportunity to re-focus and place curriculum at the heart of school planning. Key curriculum changes include:
- building strong foundations for future learning with new English and mathematics syllabuses for Kindergarten to Year 2
- an entirely new curriculum from 2022 with new syllabuses focused on what is essential to know and do in early and middle years of schooling, and key learning areas in the senior years
- providing more time for teaching by reducing the hours teachers spend on extra-curricular topics and issues and compliance requirements
- strengthening post- school pathways with new learning areas for Years 11 and 12 that clearly link learning to future employment and study options.
The new curriculum will ensure every student develops strong foundations for learning, life and work. The reforms are vital for the young people in our schools today, and for those who will arrive in the years to come. More information can be found on the NSW Department of Education and NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA)
Kind regards
Jas Stuart
Assistant Principal Learning and Teaching

Services Available:
Student Wellbeing Officer:
- Enhance student learning and wellbeing outcomes by identifying and establishing support networks for students with staff, the school community, and locally-based government services and community agencies.
- Support transition, between schools and post-school enrolments by working with transition coordinators and external providers.
Meet our Student Wellbeing Officer: Lindsay Tulloch
To all our wonderful families,
I’m pleased to introduce myself and my key responsibilities as the Student Wellbeing Officer for St Mary’s Primary.
I work in partnership with the school community, including students, parents, school staff, and community organisations, to support student well-being here at St Mary’s. My goal as a Student Wellbeing Officer is to promote student safety, resilience, and prosocial behaviours. My role allows me to work with students one-on-one and/ or in small groups.
This role works collaboratively with external agencies and creates referral pathways for students and families to child and family support agencies.
Evidenced Based Programs that I am skilled in running to support students are:
Storm Birds - Stormbirds is an education program that supports children and young people to develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes required to understand and manage experiences of change and loss following natural disasters.
Seasons Of Growth - Seasons for Growth is a small group education program that supports children and young people to develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes to understand and respond well to experiences of change, loss and grief.
Seasons for Growth supports children and young people who have experienced change and loss, including, although not limited to friendship changes; family separation; loss or death of someone they care about; loss of a pet; relocation and forced migration; living away in out of home care; physical or mental illness; or impacts of war, terrorism or pandemics.
To access these programs, students may be referred by Parents, Teachers or a Leadership Team Member. A student might be referred to me for support in areas such as building self–esteem, resilience, conflict resolution and coping skills, peer mediation, or to be connected to external support and youth services.
For more complex issues, referral is made through our Assistant Principal Mission, Dominique Montford, to ensure the most appropriate course of action.
My role is not to provide psychological assessment or therapy; rather, I am part of the pastoral care team at St Mary’s, offering comprehensive support to students and their families.
I wish all families a wonderful and safe Easter,
Lindsay Tulloch

Cross Country Trials
Last Friday was a perfect day for our cross-country carnival, not too hot and just a little damp as we just avoided the rain. God was smiling down on us. Every student that completed the course was outstanding. Well done St Mary’s.

If the rapid antigen test is positive and the student is unwell and/or experiencing any symptoms, they CANNOT attend school.
If the rapid antigen test is positive and the student is feeling well and not displaying or experiencing any symptoms, they CAN attend school but the school is to be informed of the positive test result.
Attendance

- Please use Compass to record full day absentees. Partial absences are recorded by staff when students are signed in and out of the office.
- Students who leave a school event early will have a partial absence recorded.
- A medical certificate or other documentation may be requested where frequent absences due to illness occur.
- Generally, extended leave (greater than 10 days) during the school term would not be approved. These absences are recorded on the roll as unjustified and a completed Form 01 Extended Leave Notification Travel/Other Greater than 10 Days is required.
- In exceptional circumstances parents may complete an Form 02 Approved Extended Leave Application - Travel/Other Greater than 10 Days for consideration by the Principal, explaining why an absence for extended leave is in the best educational interest of the student. Kiss and Drop Zone in Turf Street
Just a reminder that the Kiss and Drop Zone is currently signed as a one minute parking zone. This means that you cannot park your car in the kiss and drop zone for an extended period. The students arrive at Kiss and Drop at 3pm and are supervised in this zone until 3.20pm. Please consider arriving closer to 3pm for collection.
The Kiss and Drop is designed for you to stay in your car while your child enters the car. If your child cannot open the car door and secure their own seatbelt, you need to park your car in the designated parking areas and walk to the gate to collect your child. Please drive through as far as possible to allow sufficient space for other drivers in the zone. The Kiss and Drop Zone does not function effectively and becomes congested if there are any hold ups or delays.
The school does not request the presence of the Grafton Police to manage traffic at the front of the school. However, there is a regular police presence on Turf Street monitoring the safety of the school zone. Please ensure that you adhere to all traffic signs in the area to avoid fines.
Please check out our school Safe Travel webpage that details all the processes for travel to and from school.
Parking in Hoof Street
There are a small number of parking spaces near the Sunrise Shop (corner of Hoof and Turf Streets) for use by their customers. To assist this small business, we suggest parking away from the corner.
Working With Children Check (WWCC)
At St Mary's we are committed to creating and supporting a culture of safety for children and ensuring that children are protected. All employees and volunteers are required to have a current WWCC.
NB - The vast majority of volunteers in schools are parents of a child attending the school at which they are volunteering (eg reading groups, fetes, camps, excursions and canteen) and therefore do not require a WWCC. Exceptions to this are
-
volunteers interacting one-on-one with a child not their own,
-
working with children who have a disability,
-
offering mentoring services,
-
when the volunteer is not a parent or close relative.
